Future-Forward Web Design
Recently, the design team here at Zenman, a leading Denver interactive agency, took stock of our recent web design and web development projects, and assessed how our own website chalked up to the competition we’d created for ourselves online. It didn’t take us long to realize, that, well…we needed to do some work. Serious work. It had been over three years since our last website re-design and re-development, and it was time for a change.
We recently launched our new website, zenman.com, and did so using Responsive Web Design – a future-looking development trend that is taking the web world by storm. Using our own website as a testing ground, we’re mastering this emerging style of web development to create beautiful, functional websites that address the needs of traditional web users, as well as their mobile-only counterparts.
Why consider Responsive Web Design?
A few years ago, businesses could get away without a website. Today, a web presence is essential. More and more customers are using their smart phones and other mobile devices to view information on the web. We did a little digging in to the subject, and recent studies illustrate the importance of targeting mobile web audiences.
- By 2015, mobile users will exceed 1,000,000,000 globally.
- More than 85% of all mobile phones sold in 2011 were web-ready.
- Today, more than 25% of all web users are using only a mobile device to view websites and other information on the web.
How is designing for mobile users different?
Many web-enabled phones show full websites on their tiny screens, leaving users with a plague of problems – tiny text, layout and graphic design issues, scrolling and zooming miscues and complicated and cramped navigation. Further, most websites designed for desktop users are not developed to adapt to touch screens and taps – only for mouse interaction. With new mobile platforms and devices being designed and developed daily, it is becoming not only impractical, but impossible, to design websites or mobile applications that fit each one of these devices.
So….what is Responsive Web Design?
A responsive website changes its graphic design, web layout, presentation of content and its overall appearance and design depending on the screen size on which it is displayed. Based on the concept of responsive architecture, whereby a room automatically adjusts for the flow and number of people in it, responsive websites can be configured to automatically adjust text size for mobile devices, to simplify navigation, or to change the layout and design so that zooming in and scrolling aren’t necessary. More complex customization of responsive design can include hiding completely or tailoring text to present different information, changing photos, graphics and colors to better fit a smaller screen and to eliminate click-usage that is necessary for desktop users.
Responsive websites are not costly, and are a forward-thinking, innovative online investment for your business’s growth.
